HOME (BUILDING & CONTENTS) INSURANCE

WHAT IS HOME (BUILDING & CONTENTS) INSURANCE?

Home (building & contents) insurance provides you with protection against damage or loss.

Home insurance is a combined policy, also called building and contents cover, which insures your building and contents in a single policy.

The building insurance part of the cover provides financial protection if the structure of your home is damaged by major events such as fires, storms and floods. (It does not cover you for wear and tear on your property. This is taken care of with regular maintenance.) The insurable structure of your property normally includes the walls, roof and floors, and it can cover damage to fittings and fixtures as well.

You can buy contents cover as a stand-alone policy. More often it is combined with building insurance, and sold as home (building & contents) insurance.

Contents insurance is not a legal requirement, but it’s a good idea to have this cover to protect yourself against the costs of replacing personal possessions which are lost, stolen or damaged.

Contents cover will normally protect you against risks such as fire, flooding, theft and storms.  Cover for accidental damage may cost more.

More expensive possessions will normally need extra cover, which carries an additional premium. If the value of specific high value item/s is more than 30% of your contents valuation, you should consider specified personal possessions cover.

It also makes sense to insure specified personal possessions for cover away from your home. Items such as watches, jewellery, golf clubs and expensive musical instruments are good examples of specified personal possessions.

WHY DO I NEED HOME (BUILDING & CONTENTS) INSURANCE?

It makes sense to have home insurance. If your home and its contents are destroyed or extensively damaged, then without home insurance, you could face a crippling bill to repair or replace your property, and its contents.

Home insurance is not a legal requirement though if you have a mortgage on your home, your mortgage lender will generally stipulate that you need to have building cover to protect the property on which they have lent you money.
